Dr. Özkan has been with the Biomedical Engineering Institute since 1995. He has been teaching courses in Electronics, Therapeutic and Diagnostic Devices, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Special courses on Intelligent Robotic Control. He has been supervising masters thesis and doctoral dissertations. Dr. Özkan has involved in several academic projects in Turkey, Japan and USA taking various roles as project leader, research associate and research assistant. He was an employee of Bridgestone Corporation, R&D Department, Mechatronics Development Section in Tokyo for three years, until 1995. There he was working on application of artificial intelligence and neural network technology on robotics. During 1990 and 1991 he was a full time employee of the Neurological Surgeries Department of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville as a research associate. At the Medical Center he developed stereotactic radio surgery systems for intra-cranial surgeries and conducted research on the quantitative analysis of the tomographic brain images for clinical utilization. He was a research assistant at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Departments of Vanderbilt University between 1986 and 1990. He had been the systems manager of the Intelligent Robotics Lab. of Vanderbilt University EE Department between 1988 and 1991. During this period he was the leader of several commercial projects on robotics, developed at Vanderbilt University for US and Japanese Industries. He was also involved in a project developed for the NIH of USA. Dr. Özkan is a Bogazici University honor graduate and an invited member of Tau-Beta-Pi Science Honor Society of USA since 1990.
